Bondage is generally meant as a way of restricting movement. Sometimes this is just for practical purposes and nothing more. For example, if it was important that a submissive not move lest something go wrong, bondage helped to ensure that he remained exactly as I wished him to be.
Bondage also has deeper implications. For example, domination was always at the core of what I did; thus, bondage could be used to instill the feeling that a submissive has genuinely lost control. When one’s movement, sight, hearing, or speech have been restricted by another person, it helps to solidify the submission of that person. The submissive cannot do much of anything without the Dominant allowing it. You’re not going to go anywhere when you are locked in a steel cage or suspended four feet from the floor.
Bondage can also be used as a form of S&M.
There are certain positions that are challenging when an individual has been in them for a while. The longer you are in that position, the more things start to hurt. Additionally, there is something called predicament bondage. This form of bondage is great when used as S&M because the submissive is forced to choose between two equally challenging positions. For example, if the submissive moves to relieve pressure off the arms, that may instead put pressure on the legs. When he relieves the pressure from the legs, he is back to putting pressure on the arms.
Bondage is often used as a form of sensory deprivation. Sensory deprivation occurs when one or more of your senses has been restricted. In my own practice as a professional Dominatrix I found that most submissives who were interested in sensory deprivation enjoyed a full loss of the senses. While it serves to heighten the feeling of having lost control, I found that people who had a specific interest in this form of bondage were interested in it for more than that. When one is deprived of their senses, a submissive cannot tell how much time has passed or what is happening around them. This often feeds into captivity fantasies which go beyond simple domination. For other submissives, sensory deprivation allows them to enter a mental state that is relaxing and even meditative. This is the same reason that many vanilla individuals go into float tanks. However, a Dominant must be careful to monitor their submissives closely since sensory deprivation can lead to anxiety, a panic attack, problematic thoughts, and even hallucinations. It is important that a submissive can communicate a problem to an attentive Dominant should something like this occur.
Another form of bondage is called mummification. Mummification involves wrapping the submissive in laters of something that will restrict movement. Mummification is most commonly done with layers of fabric, tape, saran wrap or a combination of these, or similar, items. However, mummification can also be done through the use of a bondage bag. This device is often made of leather or canvas and resembles a body bag that usually stops below the head and secures at the neck. They often have zippers and straps to secure the bag and keep a submissive from moving. It is like a straight jacket for your whole body. Bondage bags can also be made of latex, spandex, lycra, and even pantyhose material. Submissives and bondage enthusiasts who like mummification often mention that they enjoy the feeling of being cocooned and closed in. It is not uncommon to see the mummified individual to also be put in a hood. As always, a Dominant should monitor their submissive closely since the individual often cannot free themselves if there is a problem. For example, if a submissive starts feeling claustrophobic, they need to be released quickly. I strongly advise keeping a pair of safety shears used by divers and EMTs in case a submissive needs to be quickly cut out of bondage.
Vacuum beds are made of latex around a frame of some sort (PVC pipe is common) and lay flat on the floor. The submissive is put into the vacuum bed then the air is sucked out of the bed so the latex closes in tightly around the individual preventing movement. An air hole or tube is built into the device for breathing purposes. More rarely, some vacuum beds leave the entire face exposed. I have also seen vacuum cubes which are like vacuum beds except they allow for more positions. Like mummification, the feeling of total immobilization or being cocooned can be exciting and comforting for a submissive. As always, a Dominant must monitor a submissive since the sub cannot move. Breathing obstructions can create a very, very bad situation. Also, because these devices are made of latex, one must watch for allergic reactions.
Device bondage occurs when a submissive is restrained through the use of a device. Some examples include stockades, metal tubular contraptions meant to secure individuals in different positions, spanking benches that secure the submissive at various points, various styles of St Andrew’s and other styles of crosses, spreader bars, cages, and bondage chairs. I liked device bondage because the devices look intimidating, so my submissives instantly knew that things were about to get real. They were also convenient because I could quickly get someone into (or onto) one and have them locked into place in a few seconds or minutes.
Suspension is a form of bondage wherein the submissive is up off the ground. One of the most common forms of suspension is rope suspension. The individual is hung off the ground by a series of deliberately placed ropes that are tied and knotted in specific ways. Other forms of suspension bondage can be done with sex swings and slings so that the weight is fully supported by the swing or sling. I have also seen suspension bondage done with heavy duty restraint cuffs attached to spreader bars. I had a motorized winch in which to lift my submissives off the ground with little physical effort after they were tied or attached to something.
For the sake of brevity I will not go every bondage item that can be used, but do not forget bondage with chains, handcuffs, scarves, straight jackets, commercial bed straps, bondage sleeves, commercially made cuffs, neckties, bondage tape, and so forth. Remember, you are limited only by safety and your imagination!
